Pure Salmon Joins “Migration” to Protect BC’s Salmon
In an effort to move British Columbia's salmon farms from water to land, the Pure Salmon Campaign will spend the next two weeks with Alexandra Morton and hundreds of other activists on the “Get Out Migration,” a 250-mile journey across Vancouver Island.

Scotland: Fisheries Biologists Object to Salmon Farm Site
Eighteen Senior Fisheries Biologists object to Lighthouse Caledonia’s salmon farm application in Broad Bay on the west coast of Scotland, pointing to studies that fish farms constitute “a significant threat” to recovering local populations of healthy wild salmon and sea trout fisheries.

Deceptive Farmed Salmon Advertisement
Groups lodge formal complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission against the Norwegian Seafood Export Council for its October 2009 ad in Cooking Light magazine citing "unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices in the marketplace."

Fish Farms on BBC Radio Scotland
On February 13, the BBC Radio Scotland program Out of Doors interviewed Fiona Cameron of the Sea Trout Group and the North Atlantic Salmon Trust. She spoke on the damages fish farming is doing to Scotland's wild fish stock through farm escapes and the spread of sea lice.

Pure Salmon Campaign hosts screening of “Farmed Salmon Exposed” at Seafood Summit
On February 1 in Paris, France, the Pure Salmon Campaign hosted a film screening to show how Norwegian salmon farming operations in British Columbia and Chile threaten iconic wildlife and the marine environment. “Farmed Salmon Exposed: The Global Reach of the Norwegian Salmon Farming Industry,” produced by Canadian filmmaker Damien Gillis, visually portrays the damage caused by open-net salmon farms to marine ecosystems worldwide.

New offshore aquaculture bill
On December 17, U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-23) introduced the National Sustainable Offshore Aquaculture Act of 2009. This legislation would establish national standards for off-shore fish farms. There is currently no overarching policy governing aquaculture development in federal marine waters.

Pure Salmon Campaign to host Paris debut film screening at Seafood Summit

On Monday, February 1 at 10:30 a.m. CET at the Paris Marriot Rive Gauche Hotel & Conference Center, the Pure Salmon Campaign will host a film screening to show how Norwegian salmon farming operations in British Columbia and Chile threaten iconic wildlife and the marine environment. Speakers at the Seafood Summit event will discuss current problems affecting the global farmed salmon industry and will propose more sustainable solutions.

Liz Vaccariello, Editor-in-Chief for Prevention Magazine, writes about food safety and what foods to avoid, including farmed salmon. Dr. David Carpenter gives commentary about the safety of eating farmed salmon, saying that "you can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer."

Global Week of Action

The fourth annual Global Week of Action starts Monday, November 9th. This year, at events occurring around the world, the Pure Salmon Campaign and coalition partners will premiere a new documentary by Canadian filmmaker Damien Gillis, "Farmed Salmon Exposed: The Global Reach of the Norwegian Salmon Farming Industry."

At Aqua Nor, a biannual international aquaculture trade show, the Pure Salmon Campaign will call upon King Harald of Norway to insist that Norwegian-owned companies operating salmon farms in Canadian waters adopt strict environmental standards to protect British Columbia’s wild salmon populations.

Official report reveals that salmon aquaculture in Chile uses 600 times more antibiotics than Norway
Oceana - July 24, 2009
Oceana Chile, a partner organization in the Pure Salmon Campaign, recently obtained data from the Chilean Ministry of Economy confirming excessive use of antibiotics in Chilean farmed salmon.  According to the Minister's report, Chile used almost 600 times more antibiotics than the larger Norwegian industry.  Chile in 2008 used 325,616 kg of antibiotics.

U.S. FDA Reports Show Unapproved Chemicals Used by Largest Chilean Salmon Farms
April 23, 2009
Documents recently acquired from the U.S. FDA reveal that three Chilean salmon farming companies, including the two largest producers of farmed salmon, used a number of drugs not approved by the U.S. government. The documents further show that the farmed salmon containing residues of unapproved chemicals were destined for the U.S. market.

New Study: Fish Farms Drive Wild Salmon Populations Toward Extinction

A study appearing in the December 14 issue of the journal Science shows, for the first time, that parasitic sea lice infestations caused by salmon farms are driving nearby populations of wild salmon toward extinction.
