Statement by Andrea Kavanagh, Director, Pure Salmon Campaign

On NOAA's Aquaculture Summit

Washington — Today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration began its two-day national marine aquaculture summit. The event will explore and analyze business opportunities and challenges for U.S. marine aquaculture.

"The entire conference focuses on business and investment opportunities, while largely ignoring critical environmental problems that plague this industry. If the U.S. wants to become a true leader within the aquaculture arena, it must promote and enforce the highest environmental standards possible."

"Right now, environmental concerns are an afterthought at best. That needs to change as industry and political leaders continue to identify key challenges and priorities."

Andrea Kavanagh is attending both days of the conference and is available for interviews.

The Pure Salmon Campaign is a global project of the National Environmental Trust. It has partners in the United States, Canada, the European Union and Chile all working to improve the way salmon is produced.
