Statement by Andrea Kavanagh, director, Pure Salmon Campaign,

On the Pan Fish/Marine Harvest Merger

Washington, D.C. — Today, the UK Competition Commission approved the merger of Pan Fish and Marine Harvest thereby creating the world's largest salmon farming company.

"As owner of Pan Fish, the world's largest salmon farming company, John Fredriksen has an historic opportunity to transform the salmon aquaculture industry and to turn the tide on efforts to save global wild salmon stocks.

"The Pure Salmon Campaign urges Fredriksen, the farmed salmon industry leader and a passionate wild salmon fisherman, to adopt salmon production that eliminates disease transfer, waste pollution and escapes. The Pure Salmon Campaign also calls upon John Fredriksen to ensure that fish used for salmon feed is sourced solely from sustainable fisheries.

"Mr. Fredriksen has the opportunity to raise the standards for the salmon farming industry, setting an industry benchmark that protects the environment and proves that good business and responsible stewardship of our oceans is an investment that will pay dividends for generations to come."

Background

  • Pan Fish acquired Marine Harvest, Fjord Seafoods and Stolt Seafood creating a company with 30-40% of the world's farmed salmon production.

  • Pan Fish is the largest producer of farmed salmon in Chile and Canada. These countries are the two primary sources of farmed salmon for American consumers. Eighty percent (80%) of the salmon consumed by Americans is farm-raised.

The Pure Salmon Campaign is a global project of the National Environmental Trust. It has partners in the United States, Canada, Europe and Chile all working to improve the way salmon is produced.
